The Developer: Tom Taylor
Growing up in Los Angeles, Tom Taylor was exposed to a wealth of culture from an early age. But it wasn’t until after moving to the Pacific Northwest, and over 10 years of pursuing a career in music and percussion that he first ran into Mamady Keïta.
I went to one of Mamady’s workshops in Washington State back in the early 90’s. I had been playing drums for a long time, and conga and djembe for a few years, but never really experienced traditional West African drumming. I went to the workshop hoping to learn a few ‘chops’ that I could incorporate into my own style. That workshop changed my life. I was hooked.
Even though Tom’s career path took him more into recording sound for the motion picture industry, he maintained his love for drums, and particularly Mandingue djembe and dunun rhythms.
In 2012, Tom was inspired to build a drumming app that would be his contribution to the culture. It took almost 3 years, but the result speaks for itself. djembeföla! is Tom’s homage to Mamady and his legacy.
